An Interview with Ladonna Shanks
What is my favorite thing about being a writer? I genuinely love writing. When God gives me a topic and a place to start, the writing is very fulfilling. Sharing it and its message with others is my next favorite thing. What is the most surprising thing I learned in creating a book? This most surprising thing is that I actually created a book. When I see one of my published works, it’s difficult for me to grasp that I wrote it. There is almost a disconnect.
What questions do I ask myself when I am preparing for a new book? Probably “Are you sure you want to be doing this?” And “Why?” Creating a book is not an easy task.
How do I come up with story lines/book topics? My first book, “Tidbits and Pearls,” was the result of a passion and desire to share God’s presence in everyday life, and the truth that He created us for friendship and a relationship with Him. The second one continued with that theme, with an additional element of encouragement. The title of that one, “Sermons from a Soapbox” hearkens back to my early years, when I was quite precocious. In my golden years I’m not really preaching, but I do have a soapbox (my book) from which I can declare my sermons/messages. This third one, “My Grief Shared” was part of my life when my partner passed, and not one I went looking for.
Why do I write in my particular genre? I can do no other. I can’t make up a story if my life depended on it. So, I share my story in a variety of ways through essays.
