Blog Tour: Their Daring Hearts

Blog Tour: Their Daring Hearts

About the Book

Author: Sharlene MacLaren
Genre: Christian Historical Romance (Civil War)
Release Date: Jan 9, 2018

Levi Albright rebelled against his Quaker roots to fight for abolition in the Union army in the first year of the Civil War. Two years later, 19-year-old destitute orphan Josephine Winters, with her chopped hair, boy’s clothes, and new name, “Snipp,” enlists in the Union army out of desperation.
Just over five feet tall and barely weighing as much as a newborn calf, Snipp seems to Levi to be barely old enough to hold “his” gun. But despite being teased by the regiment, Snipp quickly earns admiration for skill with a musket and unequaled bravery. When Levi explains one night that he is a Quaker leading a regiment, it leads to a late-night discussion of faith and a developing friendship.
But Snipp’s secret can only be hidden for so long. After an injury forces Josie to reveal her real identity, Levi is angered by her deception. Worse, Josie is marched out of the company without a chance to explain—or even say goodbye. Will their friendship survive? Or will the hatred saturating the war-torn nation affect even the heart of a peace-loving Quaker?

My Thoughts

I enjoyed book one in the “Forever Freedom” series, Summer on Sunset Ridge, so I’m not surprised that Their Daring Hearts is just as good. The only thing I took exception to was that Josie is described as slight of stature with fine, feminine features, yet a unit full of men can’t figure out that she is a woman, or those who think she is a fourteen year old boy rather than the nineteen year old she claims to be, don’t turn her in to the authorities. Was the Union that desperate for soldiers? Having said that, the story is well-written, and obviously well-researched. References to battle dates and locations are accurate, and the fighting scenes are realistic without being gruesome. I enjoyed the way Josie’s and Levi’s friendship develops, and despite clues along the way, I didn’t figure out the identity of the traitor. There are a lot of men in the unit to keep track of, but the author gives each of them unique characteristics which make them memorable in their own way. I liked learning about the Quaker beliefs and Levi’s struggle with them is realistic. Highly recommended.
I received this book for free from CelebrateLit Publicity, and a favorable review was not required. All opinions expressed are my own.

  1. I think many people confuse Quakers with Mennonites with Amish. It's great to find a book that will help readers understand what being Quaker means.
